Cal Wagenaar was born in Salisbury, Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe, and immigrated to South Africa in 1973. He started a jewellery manufacturing apprenticeship in Durban the following year.

In 1988, Cal opened his own business, Studio 39, working from a small studio in his Westville home. Here he designed and made individual hand-made jewellery, following a series of individual consultations with clients.

Five years on, a growing client-base and a demand for varied stock Cal moved into retail. Together with his wife, Sue, Cal opened Studio 39 at The Colony Center in Hillcrest in March 1995.

Here the business grew to include a selection of watches and fine jewellery, while maintaining the studio's founding focus on the manufacture of high-quality jewellery. In response to demand for individual service and hand-crafted jewelry, the staff increased to three qualified jewellers.

After 7 years in Hillcrest, Studio 39 moved to the present location in Delcairn Centre, Kloof. Although the Studio has grown over time, Cal and Sue, together with two goldsmiths and dedicated front-office staff, strive to provide first-class service and fine hand-crafted jewellery in platinum and 18ct gold. The manufacture of each piece of jewellery begins with a detailed discussion of your own preferences and ideas, and all pieces are personally supervised and finished by Cal.
